The Northern Sea Route, which occupies a special place in the geographical imagination of Russian audiences, after the active conquest of the Arctic in the 1930s and subsequent planned development in the late Soviet period, was pushed out of the forefront of Russian politics in the 1990s. A new surge of interest in the Arctic occurred at the beginning of the XNUMXst century, when the phrase “Northern Sea Route” again became important on the government agenda. This collective monograph offers three approaches to the study of the Northern Sea Route - from the perspective of social anthropology, history and economic geography. The body of topics under consideration includes the connections between the material infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route and the social relations that support it; presentation of the Northern Sea Route by residents of the Arctic coast, professional communities and a wide audience; the practical and rhetorical adaptation of coastal communities to socio-economic changes; various concepts for managing the Northern Sea Route infrastructure, as well as the political logic of projects for the development of a “national transport highway”. The plural stated in the title of the book indicates that the phenomenon itself is not identical for different audiences: The Northern Sea Routes are historical and modern, social and political, rhetorical and practical—Russia’s multiple routes in the Arctic.
